South Africa all-rounder Wiaan Mulder who was slotted to bat at no.3 in World Test Championship (WTC) final, revealed that his Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) teammate Travis Head was "broken" after the loss at Lord's. Mulder said that he called Head. The Australian was pleased with South Africa ended their ICC trophy drought but disappointed that the Pat Cummins-led side ended up on the losing side. Mulder feels there is an image of Australians being 'nasty' but in reality, they are 'true champions'.
"I actually spoke to him (Head) last night on the phone. He was chuffed for the way it went for us. Obviously he was broken that they didn't win, but I think overall, the spirit of the game was really as high or as good as it could be. You think about the Aussies, you always think about them as being a little bit nasty at times, but I think these guys are true champions," Mulder told ICC Digital.
Mulder feels SRH captain Cummins and Head as great guys. While Mulder did not get many opportunities in the IPL 2025, he faced Cummins and Head in the nets. The experienced helped in the WTC 2025 final.
"Heady is one of the top blokes around and Patty is also a great guy. I spent some time with them at the Sunrisers during the IPL and there was a lot of banter. I trained a lot because I didn't play a lot in the IPL and I spent a lot of time facing Pat and facing Heady (in the nets), so there was a lot of banter coming into the WTC," said the Proteas all-rounder.
Mulder played just one game in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 and remained wicketless. With bat, he scored six runs. He replaced an injured Brydon Carse at his base price of Rs 1 crore.
Mulder's crucial contributions after disappointing first innings
In the WTC 2025 final, he was given the role to bat at no.3. He remained wicketless and conceded 45 runs in Australia's first innings and then got out for a single-digit score. In the second innings, Mulder knocked over his SRH teammate with a delivery from around the stumps. Then, he contributed with a crucial 50-ball 27. He shared a 61-run partnership for the second-wicket with centurion Aiden Markram in the run chase of 282.
