Delhi Capitals thrashed Gujarat Giants by six wickets in WPL 2025 clash

With this win Delhi Capitals catapulted to top of the WPL 2025 points table

Delhi Capitals (DC) rode on Jess Jonassen's splendid knock and Marizanne Kapp's superb bowling to notch a decisive six-wicket win over the Gujarat Giants (GG) in a Women's Premier League (WPL) 2025 clash held in Bengaluru on Tuesday, February 25. After restricting the Gujarat Giants to a meager 127 for nine in the first innings, Delhi chased down the target with ease, completing the run chase in just 15.1 overs. Shafali Verma's aggressive 44 off 27 balls, her highest score of the season, set the tone for Delhi's commanding performance.

The emphatic win also propelled the Delhi Capitals to the top of the points table, marking their third win in five matches, though their net run rate remained negative at -0.223. The pivotal moment of the chase was a rapid 74-run partnership between Verma and Jonassen for the second wicket, which effectively thwarted any hopes of a Gujarat Giants comeback. This partnership, following the early dismissal of Meg Lanning, provided a solid foundation for the Capitals' victory. Verma's innings, featuring three sixes and five fours, was a spectacle before she was dismissed by Ashleigh Gardner. Jess Jonassen, however, remained unbeaten, scoring a blistering 61 off 32 balls, including nine fours and two sixes, marking her first half-century of the season.

Shafali Verma and Jess Jonassen's aggressive batting display dismantled the Gujarat Giants' bowling attack, with boundaries flowing freely across the field. Their performance suggested that the pitch, which initially appeared challenging during the first innings, was in fact conducive to scoring.

Earlier in the match, the Gujarat Giants struggled significantly, plummeting to 60 for six by the halfway mark of their innings. This collapse was largely attributed to the effective bowling of the Delhi Capitals' pace trio: Marizanne Kapp, Shikha Pandey, and Annabel Sutherland. Each bowler claimed two wickets, effectively stifling the Giants' attempts to compile a competitive total.

Despite their dominant performance, Delhi Capitals experienced a minor setback towards the end of their run chase. They lost Jemimah Rodrigues and Annabel Sutherland in quick succession, adding a brief moment of tension to an otherwise straightforward victory.

In the first innings, Bharti Fulmali's crucial unbeaten 40 was instrumental in rescuing the Gujarat Giants from a dire situation, propelling them past the 125-run mark after a disastrous start. Fulmali, batting at number eight, launched a counter-attack, smashing two sixes and four fours in her 29-ball innings. This effort proved vital after the Giants had slumped to 60 for six at the halfway point. Earlier, Deandra Dottin contributed 26 runs, hitting five fours, but failed to capitalize on her start as the Delhi Capitals bowlers maintained consistent pressure.

The Delhi Capitals' pace attack, led by Marizanne Kapp and Shikha Pandey, dismantled the Giants' top order, reducing them to 20 for four within the powerplay. Kapp initiated the damage by finding Harleen Deol's outside edge and then trapped Phoebe Litchfield leg before wicket. The fourth over saw Pandey dismiss Beth Mooney and Kashvee Gautam in quick succession, both caught by Niki Prasad. Titas Sadhu then contributed by dismissing Giants skipper Gardner, and Annabel Sutherland ended Dottin's resistance in the 11th over.

DC will next face Mumbai Indians on February 28 while GG will next take on defending champions RCB on February 27.
