5th National Physical Disability Elite Cricket Tournament began in Karnataka with a grand opening ceremony, bringing together some of the country’s top differently-abled cricketers on a national platform.
Organized under the Karnataka State Divyang Cricket Association, the tournament opened with colorful cultural performances and the presence of several leading officials associated with disability cricket in India.
Prominent dignitaries including PCCAI President Surendra Lohiya, DCCI and PCCAI General Secretary Ravikant Chauhan, Paralympic Chairman Satyanarayana, Karnataka Divyang Cricket Association President Hemchandra, and Secretary Santosh Gowda attended the inaugural event. The tournament was officially launched with the ceremonial lighting of the lamp.
Ravikant Chauhan explains vision behind Elite Tournament format
Speaking during the inauguration, DCCI Secretary Ravikant Chauhan revealed that the decision to introduce an Elite format was aimed at improving the quality and competitiveness of disability cricket in the country. He stated that while DCCI has regularly organized national tournaments featuring 24 teams, the 2026 edition has been split into Elite and Plate groups.
According to Chauhan, the top 12 teams are competing in the Elite Tournament, while the remaining sides will participate in the Plate competition. He added that the initiative is designed to identify the best talent in the country and prepare players for future international opportunities representing India.
Chauhan also highlighted the organization’s efforts towards improving facilities for players. He said DCCI has previously rewarded players with cars and scooters as “Man of the Series” prizes and remains committed to offering world-class support systems for differently-abled cricketers.
PCCAI and Paralympic officials stress growth of disability cricket
PCCAI President Surendra Lohiya stated that the organization has continuously supported disability cricket for the past 15 years. He revealed that over ₹30.36 lakh has already been distributed as “Man of the Match” rewards in national competitions, while more than ₹87 lakh in total prize money has been awarded to players so far.
Paralympic Chairman Satyanarayana also addressed the gathering and spoke about efforts being made alongside DCCI to push for the inclusion of Mixed Disability Cricket in the Asian Para Games and Paralympic Games in the future.
Former international players were felicitated during the ceremony as organizers shared messages promoting sportsmanship, dedication, and national unity ahead of the tournament.
