Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) has officially named Julian Metherell as its next president, with the experienced finance executive set to take over from Ed Smith in October 2026.
Metherell, who has been an MCC member for four decades, has played a major role in cricket administration in recent years and was instrumental in the negotiations surrounding the Hundred equity sale involving London Spirit.
Julian Metherell to succeed Ed Smith as MCC president
Metherell has built an extensive career in finance and business leadership. He previously served as a partner at Goldman Sachs between 1999 and 2011 and held the role of Chief Executive Officer of the UK investment banking division from 2006 to 2011.
Apart from his corporate background, Metherell has also remained deeply connected with cricket administration. He served as Non-Executive Chair of the Professional Cricketers' Association from 2019 to 2024 and currently chairs the Advisory Board of the Judge Business School at the University of Cambridge.
Speaking after the announcement, Julian Metherell said:
"I am deeply honoured to take on the role of MCC President, following in the footsteps of many of my cricketing idols. I have a long connection with MCC and I have many cherished memories at Lord's.
"This is a really exciting time to be involved with MCC, especially as it starts a new era of ownership of a professional cricket team and I am looking forward to driving forward both the Club and London Spirit."
MCC leadership change comes after major London Spirit investment
Metherell gained significant recognition after overseeing MCC’s role in the 2025 Hundred equity sale. A Silicon Valley-based consortium led by Nikesh Arora acquired a 49% stake in London Spirit for approximately £145 million, making it the most valuable franchise in the competition.
Following the ownership transition from the England and Wales Cricket Board, Metherell was appointed chair of London Spirit in October 2025.
Outgoing president Ed Smith praised the appointment and highlighted Metherell’s influence within the club.
"During such an exciting period for MCC, I wanted to choose a successor with huge expertise and experience, combined with a deep passion for the game and for the club.
"Julian Metherell is a great and trusted friend to cricket and an exceptional candidate. It is with enormous pleasure that I nominate him as the President of MCC from 1 October 2026."
During Metherell’s presidency, Lord's Cricket Ground is also scheduled to host both the men’s and women’s Ashes contests during the 2027 series.
