Barcelona poised to terminate out-of-favour midfielder's contract to accommodate Marcus Rashford's registration

FC Barcelona are ready to terminate the contract of midfielder Oriol Romeu to accommodate Marcus Rashford's registration in LaLiga. The Manchester United winger signed for Spanish giants for a season-long loan this summer, with a reported option to buy.

End of road for Oriol Romeu

Rashford made his debut for Barca, coming off the bench in a pre-season game against Vissel Kobe on July 27. The game ended in Barcelona's favour as they registered a win of 3-1 against the Japanese club. But, the English player has yet to be registered in LaLiga amid Barca's financial crisis.

As per reports by Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona are interested in terminating the contract of out-of-favor midfielder Oriol Romeu to accommodate Marcus Rashford's registration this summer. Romeu is in the final year of his contract, set to finish in June 2026, However Barca have asked him to look for another club.

Romeu is not a part of Hansi Flick's plan and he spent the last season on loan at Girona. Barcelona have plenty of options instead of Romeu to cover the crucial pivot role, consisting Frenkie de Jong, Marc Casado, and Marc Bernal.

The Spanish giants are working towards letting him go for registering the new signings.

In an interview with Diario SPORT, Marcus Rashford gave credit to Barcelona coach Hansi Flick for his performance against Vissel Kobe on July 27. However, He is yet to score for his new side, he displayed a great cameo in the friendly game. After the match, Rashford said:

"I know we managed to win the match today, but it’s very important to adapt to the team, get into the playing style, and deliver good football. I think we did that in both halves. (...) I believe Flick can make me play good football, and I think the reason I’m here is to help the team try to win."

The winger threw light on his preferred position, where he would expect to play:

"Maybe I prefer the left side, but I can play in different positions – one of my strengths is being able to play across the front line. I play where the team needs me and try to score goals and create them from those positions."

Usually, Hansi Flick prefers Raphina on the left side, who had an amazing 2024-25 season. Although Rashford is unlikely to replace him as a starter, he could be a crucial substitute.
