Crystal Palace’s historic FA Cup triumph was not without post-match drama, as goalkeeper Dean Henderson disclosed the cheeky remark that triggered a heated moment with Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola.
Following the final whistle, tensions flared briefly on the Wembley pitch when Guardiola appeared visibly agitated, directing animated gestures toward Henderson. The Palace goalkeeper had been instrumental in his side’s landmark victory, which saw the Eagles lift their first-ever major trophy.
A crucial but controversial performance
Henderson’s standout performance included a crucial penalty save against Omar Marmoush and a series of vital stops. However, his involvement in a controversial first-half incident nearly derailed Palace's momentum.
The 27-year-old appeared to handle the ball outside the penalty area, a moment that drew scrutiny from both referee and VAR. To Palace’s relief, no red card was issued.
I didn’t know it was for me, in all honesty, Henderson admitted to ITV Sport regarding the VAR check. I knew it came into the box. I wasn’t sure what they were doing it for. I asked Chilly [Ben Chilwell] on the side who they were doing it for and he said yeah—but who cares? It doesn’t matter. I’m not bothered.
The Pep encounter: A witty remark
Amid the euphoric celebrations, Henderson approached Guardiola to shake hands, but a light-hearted quip stoked Guardiola’s frustration.
I just went to shake his hand but obviously I think he was disappointed with the time wasting, Henderson said. I said, ‘You got the 10 minutes [of added time] that you wanted.’ No hard feelings.
The remark, though intended playfully, evidently struck a nerve with the City boss.
Reading Marmoush, remembering his father
Reflecting on the decisive penalty, Henderson revealed he had read Marmoush’s intentions clearly.
To be fair, Haaland might have stepped up. He gave it to Marmoush and I knew which way he was going. I knew I would save it, he said confidently.
Off the pitch, Henderson’s emotions ran deeper. Speaking to BBC Sport, he dedicated the win to his late father, saying,
I lost my dad at the start of the season, but he was with me today. He was with me every kick of the game. I dedicate that win to him.
