Atletico Madrid may have delivered a statement performance with a commanding 5–0 win over Real Betis, but the emphatic result has done little to quiet growing speculation around Diego Simeone’s future.
Reports in Spain suggest the long-serving manager could still be facing an uncertain road ahead, despite the club’s strong showing on the pitch.
Simeone, who has been in charge since December 2011, is the most successful manager in Atletico’s modern history.
During his tenure, the Argentine has led the club to two La Liga titles, breaking the long-standing dominance of Real Madrid and Barcelona. However, recent developments off the field appear to have placed his position under renewed scrutiny.
Internal tensions and recent setbacks
According to Sport, Atletico Madrid are weighing Simeone’s future amid concerns over recent form and internal disagreements.
While the club currently sits third in La Liga, they trail league leaders Barcelona by 10 points. Their European campaign has also raised alarm bells after a defeat to Bodo/Glimt in the final Champions League league-phase game, forcing Atletico into a playoff to reach the knockout rounds.
The report adds that Diego Simeone’s relationship with new Director of Football Mateu Alemany is strained, particularly over transfer-related decisions. These differences, combined with inconsistent results in key competitions, have reportedly intensified internal discussions.
Financial factor and succession planning
Atletico Madrid must also consider Simeone’s salary, which stands at €13 million per season, making him one of the highest-paid managers in world football.
He reportedly earns less only than Simone Inzaghi, Pep Guardiola, Mikel Arteta, and David Moyes. The scale of that commitment adds another layer of complexity to any potential decision.
Despite Diego Simeone being under contract until 2027, the report claims Alemany has already begun exploring possible successors.
Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola has emerged as a leading candidate, although he is believed to prefer remaining in the Premier League unless a compelling offer materializes.
Even after a dominant league win, Atletico’s long-standing era under Simeone appears to be entering a delicate and defining phase.
