The Flying Dutchman choses Lionel Messi over Cristiano Ronaldo.

Johan Cruyff, even regarded as the Flying Dutchman is somebody that each and every football fan has heard of but not many of us have seen him on the pitch. He was somebody who had the idea of 'total football' and 'played the beautiful game in a truly beautiful way'.

The idea of total football was first introduced in the last 60s and early 70s by Ajax coach Rinus Michels. The meaning of total football is attacking style of play in which each and every player has to contribute with both attacking and defensive style of football. While, Cruyff was not the inventor of the idea of 'total football', he was more of a custodian.

Under him, the football club Ajax reached new heights as he won in Europe on three consecutive occasions between 1971 and 1973. He was one of the most technically gifted footballers of his era and he settles the debate of who is the GOAT between Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

who does Johan Cruyff picks between Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo?

While attending the second edition of the Aspire4Sports conference held in Berlin back in 2015, the legendary Dutch striker gave his honest opinion on who is the GOAT between Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Messi is much more a team player than Cristiano is. He scores but also produces many assists. For me as a player, Messi is better. There is a big difference in being just a great goalscorer and being the best player, Cruyff said.

Every person that understands football knows this. It's absolutely ridiculous to me that some people actually think Messi isn't the best. This isn't about Cristiano at all. He's a fantastic player, one of the best goalscorers ever. This is about how ridiculously good Messi is, Cruyff added.

Lionel Messi has practically won everything in his career

To sum up Lionel Messi's career in few lines would be showing no respect for the superstar as he has achieved everything in the world of football. From the UEFA Champions League to the FIFA World Cup. He has even lifted the iconic Copa America title and even won the La Liga and Ligue 1 title's. He is one of the top scorers in football history, the most decorated player who has most number of assists to his name.
