Inter Miami’s Lionel Messi will soon face a new challenge as he prepares to feature in the 2025 MLS All-Star Game at Q2 Stadium on July 23. This marks Messi’s first appearance in the annual showcase since joining Major League Soccer in the summer of 2023.
Lionel Messi to face familiar foes in MLS All-Star debut
The MLS All-Stars are set to clash with the Liga MX All-Stars for the fourth time in the event's history. So far, MLS holds the advantage with two victories to Liga MX’s one. This edition gains added intrigue as Messi will line up alongside former FC Barcelona teammate Jordi Alba while facing off against familiar rivals from his La Liga days.
Notably, Messi will be up against Sergio Ramos and James Rodriguez, both former Real Madrid stars. Ramos currently plays for CF Monterrey, while Rodriguez represents Club León.
Star-studded Liga MX All-Star roster unveiled
Liga MX has confirmed a formidable squad packed with top talent. In addition to Ramos and Rodriguez, key players include Alexis Vega, Marcel Ruiz, and Paulinho of reigning Liga MX champions Toluca FC.
Former Real Betis midfielder Sergio Canales and Club Tijuana’s teenage sensation, 16-year-old Gilberto Mora, also feature in the team.
High-Profile absentees from Liga MX lineup
Despite an impressive lineup, several marquee signings won't be available for the match. Pumas UNAM recently signed former Juventus and Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey, while Tigres UANL secured Atletico Madrid’s Angel Correa.
Meanwhile, Pumas are reportedly finalizing a deal for former Real Madrid goalkeeper Keylor Navas, and Cruz Azul is close to acquiring striker Luka Jovic. None of these stars are expected to play in the All-Star Game.
Lionel Messi among captain nominees for MLS All-Stars
While Inter Miami’s Luis Suarez won’t participate, the MLS squad includes notable names like Hirving Lozano (San Diego), Denis Bouanga (LAFC), and Diego Luna (Real Salt Lake).
Messi joins Bouanga, Evander, and Brandon Vazquez as nominees for team captain. Fans can vote for the captain until 11:59 PM EST on July 11.
Lionel Messi in red-hot form ahead of All-Star clash
Messi enters the All-Star Game in sensational form, having contributed five goals in his last two MLS matches. He scored twice and assisted once in Inter Miami’s 4-1 victory over CF Montreal and added another brace in a 2-1 win over the New England Revolution.
