Lionel Messi prioritizes MLS over Argentina’s closing World Cup qualifier against Ecuador.

The decision comes as he recovers from a recent injury and prepares for Inter Miami’s playoff push.

Lionel Messi has confirmed he will not join Argentina for the final CONMEBOL World Cup qualifier against Ecuador. Instead, the Inter Miami superstar will return to the United States to focus on the final stretch of the MLS season.

Messi prioritizes MLS over international duty

Following Argentina’s 3-0 victory over Venezuela, Messi addressed his absence from the upcoming qualifier. “I spoke with Leo [Scaloni]. He decided I should rest. I’m coming off an injury and, even though I feel good now, we prefer to avoid the trip and another match so I can get ready for what’s coming, which is very important," Messi said. "We’re fighting for MLS - it’s a priority. I hope to be in good shape.”

The decision highlights Messi’s intent to prioritize his commitments with Inter Miami as the MLS season enters its decisive phase.

Injury concerns influence the decision

Lionel Messi’s recent injury played a key role in the choice to skip the Ecuador clash. The 36-year-old sustained an injury during the Leagues Cup, sidelining him for 15 days and affecting his rhythm.

“That injury left me out for 15 days and broke my rhythm," Messi explained. "I haven’t felt fully comfortable since… Now we have a busy run ahead, and I hope to finish the year strong and then start preseason well."

With the MLS playoffs approaching, Messi’s decision reflects a strategic focus on maintaining fitness and avoiding further fatigue.

Head coach explains the move

Argentina’s head coach, Lionel Scaloni, provided further insight into the reasoning. “He won’t travel to Ecuador. He finished exhausted. Honestly, he should have come off, but the emotion of the match and our plan for him to play the full game kept him on," Scaloni said. "He ended up very fatigued, and he deserves to spend this time with his family.”

This decision comes amid an intense schedule for Lionel Messi, balancing international commitments with his club responsibilities in MLS.

What This Means for Argentina and Inter Miami

While Argentina will face Ecuador without their captain, Messi’s focus on Inter Miami could prove pivotal for the team’s MLS campaign. With the season entering its final stages, Messi’s presence on the field will be crucial for Miami’s playoff aspirations.
