Star English defender, Luke Shaw, has made up his mind to leave Manchester United amid concerns over his game time, with a lucrative deal from Saudi Arabia. Shaw joined the Red Devils in 2014, but his tenure with the Premier League giants has been damaged with persistent injuries.
Luke Shaw's injury prone career
In the 2024-25 season, the 30-year-old defender made only 12 appearances for Manchester United across all competitions as was spending most time during his rehab of knee, calf, and muscle issues. As per reports by The Sun, Shaw has convinced himself to leave Manchester United and is willing to listen to offers from Saudi clubs. As of now, Shaw has two years left on his contract, but he has concerns that his time at the club has come to an end.
According to the report, Shaw thinks that he is way behind Diogo Dalot and Patrick Dorgu in the selection race at left-back. On the other hand, head coach Ruben Amorim is thinking of integrating 18-year-old Diego Leon, who was acquired for £3.3 million from Paraguayan club Cerro Porteno.
Serious injury problems with Shaw started in 2015, when he suffered a double leg break against PSV Eindhoven, which kept him out for 11 months. Till now, Shaw has suffered injuries on 28 different occasions during his Manchester United career. The Sun added that Amorim is not in a haste to let go of Shaw.
Luke Shaw was last seen in action for United in a friendly game against Leeds in Sweden, the match ended in a 0-0 draw. After the game, Amorim appreciated Shaw's performance.
Manchester United legend Lee Sharpe has urged Ruben Amorim to retain the star left-back. Sharpe believes that Shaw is one of the best defenders in his position given if he is fully fit.
"I think it’s a shame what has happened to Shaw. I think on his day, he is probably one of the world's best left-backs. He is really good on the ball, has a good eye for the pass, likes to get forward and he reads the game very well," said Sharpe.
"His injuries the last season have scuppered his career, and now it just depends on him, the manager and the physios and what he has left in his body. It is a very difficult situation for him and the club."
“If he can stay fit, no one in the club is a better left centre-back than him. The manager needs someone who can play with the ball and he fits very well. I also think he is an ideal fit for the wing-back role, but I don’t know if his body can handle it,” Sharpe added.
So far, Luke Shaw has made 287 appearances across all competitions for United and provided 33 goal contributions for the side.
