Emotional funeral held in Gondomar with hundreds paying tribute to the late footballer

Fresh developments have surfaced in the tragic death of Portuguese footballer Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva, following a fatal car crash in Zamora, Spain. Spanish police have now disclosed preliminary findings from their ongoing investigation, revealing that excessive speed may have been a key factor in the devastating incident.

Police confirm Diogo Jota was likely behind the wheel

The Spanish Civil Guard issued its second official statement since the crash, stating that early evidence strongly indicates Jota was driving the Lamborghini when it veered off an isolated stretch of motorway in northwestern Spain. The car, reportedly traveling "in excess of the speed limit," lost control and ultimately burst into flames, claiming the lives of both men.

“All the tests carried out for the moment point to the driver of the crash vehicle being Diogo Jota,” the Civil Guard confirmed. “The expert report is still being worked on and finalised. Among other things, traffic police from the Zamora branch of the Civil Guard are studying the tread marked by one of the wheels of the vehicle.”

Speeding likely a major factor, say investigators

While the final report is pending, preliminary investigations point to "a possible high excess of speed over the permitted speed on that stretch of the motorway." This adds to earlier speculation from authorities who initially suspected a tyre blowout as the vehicle attempted to overtake another car.

Shortly after the accident, an initial police update stated:

“Everything is pointing to a tyre blowout as the car was overtaking. As a result of the accident, the car caught fire and both occupants died.”

Funeral draws hundreds as Liverpool squad mourns

Diogo Jota and Silva were en route to Santander to catch a ferry to the UK, following medical advice against air travel after Jota’s lung surgery. The emotional aftermath saw hundreds gather for a heartfelt funeral in Gondomar on Saturday.

Liverpool FC, still reeling from the tragic loss, returned to training on Tuesday, with the squad granted additional time off to grieve. The Reds are scheduled to play their first pre-season match against Preston on Sunday, July 13.

Awaiting full report and possible public disclosure

The full police report will be submitted to the court in Puebla de Sanabria. However, it remains uncertain whether all findings regarding Diogo Jota's crash will be made public.

At this time, authorities and legal teams are continuing their in-depth examination of the crash scene and vehicle remains. No definitive conclusions have been released yet, but the evidence shared so far is beginning to paint a clearer picture of the tragedy.
