Italian club Atalanta pulled a massive upset in the Europa League 2024 quarter-final leg 1 after beating Premier League giants Liverpool 3-0 in their home ground of Anfield. The outcome of the match has diminished the Reds' chances of making it into the semi-final of the ongoing Europa League.

Atalanta stuns Liverpool

Atalanta's thumping victory over Liverpool has left Jürgen Klopp's men in hope of a miraculous comeback in Leg 2 in order to qualify for the next round. However, a 3-0 loss at their home has put them in an extremely difficult position.

Gianluca Scamacca scored twice in the first 60 minutes to give the visitors a dominant lead. Liverpool felt way out of touch and the fans in Anfield were left disappointed. However, things got worse after Mario Pasalic scored the third goal for Atalanta in the 83rd minute. The lead remained 3-0 at full time with Liverpool taking a huge loss at their home.

"I didn't like our tactical positioning in possession. We gave them one situation by passing the ball there, then everyone was chasing another guy. We scored one that was offside but it was a bad game from us. Atalanta had a good game, scored three goals, and deserved to win," Klopp said after the match

Atalanta ends Liverpool's winning run at home

Liverpool was undefeated at their home ground in Anfield in the past 14 months and 34 games. Their last loss at home was against Real Madrid back in February 2023. when the Madrid secured a 2-5 thumping win over the Reds.

The Reds will now take on Atalanta on 19 April in  Bergamo Italy. Liverpool would be hoping for a miraculous comeback and it won't be easy to pull it off in Atalanta's home.
