A former Indian cricketer has called for consistency in India’s T20I opening pair, recommending Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson for the next 10 matches. The former Indian batter has urged that the two players should be given an extended run, and if Samson doesn't impress, he should be switched with Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.

Speaking amid the ongoing series against Afghanistan, where India already leads 2-0, S Badrinath stressed that the side should avoid frequent changes and give Samson an extended opportunity through the rest of the year. The ex-batter, on his YouTube channel Cric it with Badri, said:

“Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson should open in the next 10 T20Is after this series.”

Badrinath pointed to Samson’s recent half-century and Abhishek Sharma’s explosive form as reasons to stick with the combination. Promising youngster Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who impressed earlier with a high strike rate, should wait for his chance rather than rotate immediately into the side, the former player suggested.

Only if Samson fails to deliver after a proper run would the door open for the young batter as Badrinath said, to ‘drop him and pick Sooryavanshi.’  The comments come as India prepares for the remaining fixtures and looks ahead to future assignments, with selection stability seen as key to building a settled top order. He added:

Sharma has impressed the fans with his form and has justified his place at the top. Recently, he recorded 82 off just 32 balls, including seven sixes and seven fours, against Afghanistan in the first T20I. Samson also scored 57 runs off 22 balls in the second match. Meanwhile, teenage sensation Sooryavanshi has not yet featured in any match vs the neighbouring country.
