Oscar Piastri clinched an amazing victory at the Belgian Grand Prix, producing a brilliant overtake on teammate Lando Norris in damp circumstances and tackling his tyres under pressure to secure his fourth win of the season. This result puts the McLaren racer back in the race for championship, with a 16-point lead over Norris.
The race was delayed due to rain, it began behind the safety car. Once the race got started, Norris led the pack initially, but Piastri took advantage of the small error. Frmthere, the Australian racer built the lead, even as Norris closed in late on.
“How is the gap looking?” Piastri inquired over team radio on lap 43. At that stage, Norris was just three seconds behind and closing. However, a lock-up into la Source ended his chances of a final-lap showdown.
“It’s going to be close, but if Piastri just can keep this pace, he may well just hang on,” observed former F1 driver Jolyon Palmer.
Piastri was told to go to the end on his medium tyres, while Norris was following a different strategy with hard tyres, pushed hard in the final stint. Despite the threat of rain in the final laps, Piastri kept his calm, setting two personal bests during the final stages and finishing over five seconds clear of his teammate.
Behind them, Charles Leclerc maintained his third position ahead of Max Verstappen, who finished the race right where he started, in fourth.
For Mercedes, George Russell clinched fifth followed by Alex Albon in sixth, who held his fort strongly against Lewis Hamilton, The Ferrari drive started from the pit lane and reached the seventh position with a remarkable recovery.
Liam Lawson, Gabriel Bortoleto and Pierre Gasly rounded the top ten, channelising on the race incidents and clever tyre choices to secure crucial points.
