Max Verstappen has received two additional penalty points on his F1 super license, along with in-race sanctions during the Mexican Grand Prix, as confirmed by the FIA. The Red Bull driver faced a total of 20 seconds in time penalties due to two separate incidents involving McLaren’s Lando Norris, his rival for the F1 2024 title, during Sunday’s race in Mexico City.

With these new penalty points, Verstappen's total has increased to six over the past 12 months. A one-race ban is imposed when a driver accumulates 12 penalty points, a rule that was introduced in 2014. Haas driver Kevin Magnussen was the first to be penalized under this rule earlier this season.

Horner defends Verstappen
Red Bull team principal Christian Horner staunchly defended Verstappen during the media briefing after the race, presenting GPS data from Norris’s car to support his case. Norris managed to reduce Verstappen's lead by 10 points in Mexico, leaving them 47 points apart with four races remaining in the F1 2024 season.

Horner argued that the “laws of physics” would have prevented Norris from making the corner while attempting to pass Verstappen on the outside at Turn 4 on Lap 10.

Martin Brundle Critiques Verstappen’s Actions

Sky F1 pundit Martin Brundle expressed his disappointment regarding Verstappen’s “plain dangerous” maneuver on Norris at Turn 7, which forced both drivers to go off track. After losing position to Norris at Turn 4, Verstappen executed a highly aggressive move down the inside, rejoining the track ahead of the McLaren.

Brundle labeled Verstappen’s actions as “ridiculous” and noted that he was fortunate to avoid a harsher punishment, such as a drive-through penalty.

FIA ruling on penalty points

Their ruling read: “Norris was attempting to overtake on the outside of Verstappen at Turn 4. Norris was ahead of Verstappen at the entry, apex and towards the exit of the turn when he started being forced off the track.

“The Stewards believe that the manoeuvre was done in a safe and controlled manner and that Norris would have been able to make the manoeuvre on the track had he not been forced off the track by Verstappen. Norris cut the corner but immediately gave the position he gained as a result back to Sainz.”

Liam Lawson Criticized by Helmut Marko

Red Bull adviser Helmut Marko reprimanded Liam Lawson for his aggressive reaction during his battle with Sergio Perez in the Mexican Grand Prix. Lawson, a strong candidate to replace Perez at Red Bull for the 2025 season, was seen giving Perez the middle finger after passing him on the pit straight.

Concerns for Sergio Perez’s Future at Red Bull

Former Williams and Toyota driver Ralf Schumacher speculated that Sergio Perez might not complete the 2024 season with Red Bull following a disappointing performance at his home race in Mexico. Perez has not achieved a podium since April and faced further challenges in Mexico, where he was knocked out in Q1 and received a penalty for starting outside his grid slot, ultimately finishing in a distant 17th place.
