With the opening race just around the corner, all eyes will be on Red Bull and their ability to make rapid improvements.

As the 2025 Formula 1 season kicks off, reigning world champion Max Verstappen is gearing up to defend his title at the Australian Grand Prix next weekend. However, the Red Bull Racing driver appears to have tempered expectations for the season opener. Speaking at a press event in Zandvoort, where GPblog was also present, Verstappen provided insights into his outlook for the first race of the year.

 McLaren Emerges as Early Favorite

Reflecting on the three days of pre-season testing in Bahrain, Verstappen acknowledged that Red Bull still has work to do to reach its optimal performance. The Dutchman observed that McLaren appears to have the upper hand heading into Melbourne, based on their impressive showing in testing.

"On the other hand, I think we do have some ideas on how to improve the car," Verstappen remarked, signaling that Red Bull is already working on key areas for enhancement.

 Challenges with the RB21

After spending time in Red Bull's simulator in Milton Keynes last Thursday, Verstappen shared his candid assessment of their current prospects. "I don't think we can compete for victory in Melbourne, but hopefully, we will be able to make improvements within a few races," he admitted, hinting that the team may need a few rounds to find its competitive edge.

The RB21, Red Bull’s latest challenger, has yet to earn a place among Verstappen’s favorite cars. Despite efforts over the winter break to refine the design, the reigning champion expected more from the new model.

"It's never good enough, of course, but I think we expected a very little bit more from it ourselves," Verstappen admitted.

Red Bull Aims for Quick Adjustments

While the initial performance may not be at the level Red Bull had hoped for, Verstappen remains optimistic about fine-tuning the car for Melbourne.

"After the test, you do have time to go through the data and come to certain conclusions. I think it can be tuned a bit more optimally in Melbourne. But like I said, I think we do need to improve some things," he concluded.

With the opening race just around the corner, all eyes will be on Red Bull and their ability to make rapid improvements as the season unfolds. Whether Verstappen can secure an early-season victory remains uncertain, but the Dutchman is clearly focused on getting back to peak performance as soon as possible.
