Oscar Piastri said that he will take Lewis Hamilton's advice from before the Singapore Grand Prix to not follow McLaren's team orders anymore. On media day before the Singapore Grand Prix, the seven-time F1 champion was questioned by reporters if he had any advice for the championship leader, Piastri.
"Don't give back any more positions," Hamilton said.
He was referring to McLaren's controversial racer swap at the Italian Grand Prix in early September. The team had directed Piastri to give P2 back to teammate Lando Norris after the Briton, who was running ahead the whole race, had an unusually slow pitstop, which led to him losing the place to his teammate. But because McLaren had promised Norris that he would not be undercut, the decision to swap was taken.
Sadly, McLaren had another controversy at the Singapore Grand Prix on Sunday, October 5. Lando Norris bumped into Oscar Piastri on the opening lap to claim P3. The Aussie racer labelled the move "not team-like", and when McLaren took no action about it, he called it "unfair."
Brazilian reporter Julianne Cerasoli shared on Sunday what Piastri said in response to Lewis Hamilton's advice from earlier in the week. However it is not clear whether Piastri's response came before or after McLaren's Singapore controversy.
"He's been in that position many times, I accept the advice," the 24-year-old said with a smile when presented with Hamilton's message.
Lando Norris finished on the podium at the Marina Bay circuit, while Oscar Piastri finished behind him in P4. Their combined result was good enough to win McLaren the 2025 F1 constructors' championship over the current runner-up, Mercedes.
Fernando Alonso launched an explosive rant against Lewis Hamilton at the end of Singapore GP
Fernando Alonso was extremely furious after the Singapore Grand Prix, as Lewis Hamilton finished four tenths ahead of him despite facing a brake issue on the final laps. The Ferrari racer cut many corners in the last two laps as he could not manage to apply brakes properly, and held onto P7 when the chequered flag was flown.
After seeing Hamilton cut various corners to stay ahead of him on the final lap of the race on Sunday, Alonso exploded over the team radio.
"Oh, f***ing hell, man. I cannot believe it. Yeah, he knew it. I cannot f***ing believe it, I cannot fu**ing believe it. I mean, I cannot f***ing believe it. I cannot f***ing believe it. Is it safe to drive with no brakes?" said Alonso.
"I mean, you cannot drive like if you are alone on track. No respect [for] the red flag yesterday, today, free track for them," he also added.
In the end, Alonso settled for P7 finish as Hamilton got a post-race 5-second penalty for "leaving the track without a justifiable reason." The 40-year-old finished eight, after looking almost set to finish in the top-5 before he brake issues.
