Toto Wolff confirms a setup-related disadvantage for George Russell ahead of race day.

Mercedes unable to reverse the issue, forcing Russell to adapt during the Grand Prix.

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff has admitted that George Russell will head into the Japanese Grand Prix carrying a significant disadvantage — one that could impact his race-day performance at Suzuka.

Qualifying setback exposes underlying issue

Despite securing a front-row start, Russell endured a difficult qualifying session compared to teammate Kimi Antonelli, who stormed to pole position. The Briton finished second but trailed by nearly three-tenths, highlighting a notable gap in pace.

The root of the problem, as Russell himself indicated, stemmed from a late setup tweak to the car’s rear suspension — a change that ultimately backfired.

Toto Wolff explains the costly adjustment

As reported by the Formula 1 website, Wolff confirmed that the team had made a setup decision that produced unintended consequences, significantly affecting the car’s balance.

“I think we did probably a set-up [change] on the other side, something we did that we expected to have less impact than it had,” Wolff explained.

“It put the car on the nose, so too much oversteer, and that made it very difficult for him.”

The imbalance left George Russell struggling to extract maximum performance, particularly during crucial qualifying laps.

No quick fix before race day

Crucially, Toto Wolff revealed that the issue cannot be easily reversed before the race, meaning Russell must carry the compromised setup into the Grand Prix.

“No, it’s probably the opposite – I think he needs to carry this into the race now, which is certainly a disadvantage, but these things happen.”

This limitation places Russell at a strategic and performance disadvantage, especially against a teammate starting from pole with a more stable setup.

Kimi Antonelli shines under pressure

While George Russell faces challenges, Antonelli’s composed performance drew praise from Wolff, who highlighted the young driver’s calm approach during high-pressure moments.

“I think when you hear his radio communication, also in the intercom in the garage, he’s just calm, not putting himself too much under pressure, putting the one lap in that was very good – Bono told him to put a banker in,” Toto Wolff said.

The contrast between the two drivers adds an intriguing dynamic heading into race day at Suzuka.
