The Formula 2 championship is held on the same weekends as Formula One, allowing fans to enjoy two levels of top tier motorsport action.

Formula 2 is a  openwheel, singleseater racing series that sits as the second tier in the FIA Global Pathway, one step below Formula One. Here's a breakdown of what Formula 2 is all about:

 What is Formula 2?

Formula 2 is a onemake racing championship, meaning all teams and drivers compete with identical cars—the Dallara F2 2024. The series serves as a development ground for drivers aspiring to make the leap to Formula 1, offering them a unique platform to showcase their talent and gain crucial experience.

How Formula 2 Works

The Formula 2 championship is held on the same weekends as Formula One, allowing fans to enjoy two levels of top tier motorsport action. A typical race weekend includes:
Practice session (45 minutes) on Friday
Qualifying session (30 minutes) on Friday
Sprint Race (45 minutes) on Saturday
Feature Race (60 minutes) on Sunday

Formula 2 races feature unique elements like compulsory pit stops, reverse grids for Sprint Races, and the use of Prime and Option tires to add to the strategic complexity.

 Popularity and Coverage

The series is followed by over 32 million viewers worldwide across 160+ territories. Key broadcasters include Sky Sports, FOX Sports, ESPN, Canal+, and F1TV, ensuring extensive global coverage.

Gabriel Bortoleto Clinches the 2024 Formula 2 Drivers' Championship

The 2024 Formula 2 season saw Gabriel Bortoleto take the Drivers' Championship, securing the title in a dramatic final race. Bortoleto finished second in the Feature Race behind Joshua Duerksen of AIX Racing but earned enough points to claim the championship.

Bortoleto's victory made him the first driver since Oscar Piastri to win both the Formula 3 and Formula 2 Drivers’ titles in consecutive seasons as a rookie, joining an elite group that includes Charles Leclerc and George Russell.

 Drama in the Final Race

Heading into the final race, Bortoleto’s title rival, Isack Hadjar, was just 4.5 points behind in the standings and started the race in third. However, Hadjar's hopes were dashed immediately when he stalled at the start, taking him out of contention.

Bortoleto led the race early but dropped behind Duerksen and Victor Martins of ART Grand Prix during the pit stop phase. Despite closing in on Martins late in the race, Bortoleto was unable to catch Duerksen, who took the win.

In the closing laps, Richard Verschoor of MP Motorsport made a decisive move to secure third place. Verschoor, who had started the race on Medium Pirelli tires, switched to Supersofts during a late pit stop. His superior pace allowed him to close in on Martins, overtaking him in the final corners to finish on the podium.

With Bortoleto's secondplace finish, Invicta Racing also secured the Teams’ Championship in 2024, completing a championship sweep for the team.

Bortoleto's Championship Win & Invicta Racing's Title

Bortoleto’s win capped a remarkable season for Invicta Racing, who also claimed the Teams’ Championship. The Brazilian driver’s consistent performances throughout the season were a key factor in the team's success.
