Blue, yellow, black, green and red... these are the five colors which are the identity of the Olympics. These five colors have been used in the Olympic rings. The whole world is confined in the rings of every colour of the Olympics. Every player and culture of the world is all in these five colours. Thousands of athletes from around the world will participate to win medals for their countries in their respective sport. The Olympic symbol consists of five rings of five colors, which are connected to each other. For more than a century these rings have existed in the Olympics symbol, but what is the meaning of these rings?
As per Olympic charter, Rule 8, here is the definition of the Olympic rings -
“The Olympic symbol consists of five interlaced rings of equal dimensions (the Olympic rings), used alone, in one or in five different colours. When used in its five-colour version, these colours shall be, from left to right, blue, yellow, black, green and red. The rings are interlaced from left to right; the blue, black and red rings are situated at the top, the yellow and green rings at the bottom in accordance with the following graphic reproduction.”
The meaning of Olympic rings
“The Olympic symbol expresses the activity of the Olympic Movement and represents the union of the five continents and the meeting of athletes from throughout the world at the Olympic Games.”
The meaning of the Olympic rings is to bind the whole world with one thread. These five rings of the Olympic symbol represent the unity of the five continents Africa, America, Asia, Europe and Oceania. This ring is used on the white colored Olympic flag.
Who came up with the Olympic rings?
There is a common mistake people make when they say that each colour corresponds to a certain continent. Instead, it represents the union of the five continents as the athletes from around the world meet for the Games.
In 1913, Pierre de Coubertin created the rings with five colours combined with the white background. It represented the colours of the flags of all nations at that time. The Olympic flag was designed in the year 1912 and was accepted in 1913. It was finally used in 1914. The Olympic rings made their debut in the 1920 edition. However, it was only 37 years later, the Olympic rings were defined.
“These five rings represent the five parts of the world now won over to the cause of olympism and ready to accept its fecund rivalries. What is more, the six colors thus combined reproduce those of all nations without exception,” said Coubertin, the founder of the Olympic movement
