Indian hockey team led by Harmanpreet Singh defeated Great Britain by 4-2 in the penalty shootout to qualify for their second consecutive Olympics semi-finals. India was reduced to 10 men after Amit Rohidas was shown a red card for raising his stick against a Great Britain player. Indian hockey team held the opponent to a 1-1 draw starring a strong defense amidst playing with 10 players. Harmanpreet Singh, Sukhjeet, Lalit and Rajkumar Pal scored goals for India in the penalty shootout to give India a historic victory. With this, the men in blue qualified for the Semi-finals of the Paris Olympics 2024 Men’s hockey event. India and Germany have gone up against 18 times so far with India having an edge over Germany with eight wins compared to six losses whereas four ended in a draw. The last time they met on the Olympic stage was at the Tokyo Olympics 2020. In the bronze medal match, India beat Germany 5-4 to end their 41-year medal drought. India is, by far, the most successful team in Olympic hockey history. The men's side has won 12 medals, including eight gold.
Along with India, Spain, Germany, and the Netherlands progressed to the semi-finals. Spain defeated Belgium, and Germany defeated Argentina. India got better off Great Britain and the Netherlands knocked out Australia. The first semi-final will be played between Spain and Netherlands at 5:30 pm on August 6.
