Indian shooting duo Sarabjot Singh and Manu Bhaker etched their names in the annals of Indian sports by securing a bronze medal in the 10m air pistol mixed team event at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Sarabjot Singh, Manu Bhaker script history in shooting at Paris Olympics
This historic achievement marked India's sixth Olympic medal in shooting and the first-ever in a shooting team event. Additionally, Manu Bhaker created history by becoming the first athlete from independent India to win two medals at a single Olympics. The duo's triumph came after defeating South Korea's Oh Ye Jin and Wonho Lee by a score of 16-10 in the bronze medal match. Notably, Oh Ye Jin had clinched the gold medal in the women's 10m air pistol event just two days prior.
Sarabjot Singh's Olympic journey took a dramatic turn. Disappointed after missing the cut for the men's 10m air pistol event, he brilliantly rebounded in the mixed team competition. His performance, alongside Manu Bhaker, secured a bronze medal for India, transforming heartbreak into triumph.
“I am very happy but the game was tough today. The pressure was high, but the crowd was great. I am thrilled with the way I performed today,” Sarabjot Singh told the official broadcasters of Paris Olympics 2024.
India's shooting team made history by capturing the country's first-ever mixed team medal and sixth overall Olympic shooting medal. After a slow start, with South Korea leading 2-0, Manu Bhaker and Sarabjot Singh staged a remarkable comeback. Bhaker's exceptional shooting brought India back into the game, and they eventually secured a 16-10 victory to claim the bronze.
India's Olympic medal haul so far has been solely contributed by its shooting contingent. With two medals already secured, the country's hopes for a third Olympic medal rest on the shoulders of Manu Bhaker, who is a strong contender in the upcoming women's 25m pistol event.
Meanwhile, Abhinav Bindra, India's first Olympic gold medalist, expressed his pride in Manu Bhaker and Sarabjot Singh for their historic achievement. Leading the chorus of congratulations, Bindra praised the duo for winning India's inaugural Olympic shooting team medal at the Paris Olympics.
"Manu & Sarabjot: You've done what no Indian shooting pair has done before. India's first Olympic shooting team medal. Savour this moment, you've earned it! Proud ???? #Olympics2024 #Paris2024 #Shooting #ManuBhaker #SarabjotSingh," Abhinav Bindra wrote on X.
