India's Pranati Nayak fell short of securing a medal in the women's vault final of Artistic Gymnastics at the Asian Games in Hangzhou, on Thursday, September 29. Pranati finished in the eighth spot in the vault final.
Pranati Nayak was the sole gymnast representing India at the Asian Games 2023. She commendably qualified for both the vault final and the all-round final. However, she withdrew from the all-round final, which took place on Wednesday.
During the vault final, Pranati's first vault, with a difficulty of 5.200, saw a dip in execution. Although she enhanced her performance in the second vault, it wasn't sufficient to earn her a place on the podium. In the 8-woman vault final, Pranati secured the 8th position.
Pranati's vault final performance:
Vault 1:
- Difficulty: 5.2
- Execution: 7.200
- Penalty: 0.3
- Score: 12.100
Vault 2:
- Difficulty: 4.2
- Execution: 8.400
- Score: 12.600
Total: 12.350
An Changok from North Korea clinched the Gold with a total score of 14.090, whilst Kim Sonhyang bagged the silver with 13.600.
China's Yu Linmin won the bronze with a score of 13.533, narrowly surpassing the legendary Oksana Chusovitina, who finished at 13.383. The double Olympic medalist, who made a comeback from retirement in 2021, awaited her results for a brief period as officials at the HSC Gymnasium confirmed the scores.
Entering the Asian Games, Pranati Nayak was brimming with confidence, having previously secured a bronze at the FIG World Challenge Cup in Hungary.
Although the Gymnastics Federation of India had chosen 9 gymnasts for the Asian Games, including Olympian Dipa Karmakar, only Pranati's participation in Hangzhou received the sports ministry's approval.
India's sole medal in gymnastics at the Asian Games was achieved by Ashish Kumar, who won a bronze in the floor exercise at the 2010 Asian Games.
In the qualification round, Pranati delivered a confident performance, amassing a total score of 12.716. She executed the Tsukahara back straight 360 with a difficulty of 4.4 and received an execution score of 8.466. Her subsequent vault was the Forward Handspring 360 turn, with a difficulty of 4.2, earning her an execution score of 8.366. Pranati has potential for growth, having consistently averaged scores above 13 in recent times.
