Leading the Indian delegation were the flag bearers - men's hockey captain Harmanpreet Singh and the celebrated Olympic bronze medalist boxer, Lovlina Borgohain. Lovlina in saree and Harmanpreet in kurta lit up Hangzhou as the duo led India's contingent at the Asian Games 2023's curtain raiser.

Amid the controversy of three Indian athletes from Arunachal Pradesh being denied entry, the ceremony emerged as a melting pot of China's rich cultural history, technological innovations, and a nod to Asia's unified spirit.

The narrative of the night revolved around 'Tides Surging in Asia'. This theme beautifully encapsulated the amalgamation of China with the Asian continent and the broader world. The vibrant imagery of the Qiantang river, flowing majestically through Hangzhou, underscored the proceedings.

China's vast cultural tapestry, which spans millennia, was harmoniously woven with state-of-the-art technology. This marriage of the ancient and the modern was evident in every aspect of the spectacle, be it the visuals or the mesmerizing performances that brought to life the country's journey towards modernization. Notably, the cauldron lighting showcased China's tech dominance, where virtual and real-world torchbearers collaboratively ignited the Games' Flame.

Among those in attendance were President Xi Jinping, who officially declared the games open, the Olympic Council of Asia's (OCA) interim president Randhir Singh, International Olympic Committee (IOC) chief Thomas Bach, and other global dignitaries.

Despite the pandemic-induced delay, thanks to a COVID surge last year, the games exemplified the 'Green Asian Games' ethos. Replacing traditional pyrotechnics, digital fireworks set the stadium alight, proving that eco-friendly options can still offer a touch of magic.

The bustling 80,000-seater 'Big Lotus' arena resonated with applause for athletes from all participating nations. However, the recent diplomatic spat over visa denials meant some Indian officials, like sports minister Anurag Thakur and IOA President PT Usha, were notably absent. Nonetheless, the entrance of close to 100 Indian athletes, championed by flag-bearers Harmanpreet Singh and Lovlina Borgohain, evoked an electrifying response.

The Indian male athletes showcased their pride in bandhgala jackets and khaki kurtas, while the females sported high-necked blouses with khaki-textured sarees crafted from recycled materials. India's strong representation, with 655 participants, is a testament to the nation's sporting prowess.

Hangzhou's essence was epitomized by the 'Water in Autumn Glow' theme, highlighting its iconic water landmarks. Modern technologies paid homage to Eastern aesthetics and the transformative power of culture and science.

Closing the ceremony, a 30-minute cultural extravaganza led to the cauldron's illumination and the anthem's rendition.

Hosting the Asian Games 2023 reaffirms China's resurgence post-pandemic. While the Olympics remain the zenith of multi-sport events, the Asian Games in Hangzhou boasts over 12,000 athletes, surpassing previous editions.

The games will sprawl across six cities, including Hangzhou, with 45 Asian nations vying for 481 golds across 40 sports. Notably, Esports marks its inaugural appearance. Even before the ceremony's sparkle, sports like football and cricket had already set the ball rolling.
