Four years ago, India rejoiced with a total of 70 medals, partitioned into 16 gold, 23 silver, and 31 bronze.

The pride of the nation swelled on Wednesday (October 4) as India's athletes set a new milestone at the Asian Games, outperforming their previous best by clinching over 70 medals. The limelight was especially on India's performance in comparison to its 2018 showcase in Jakarta and Palembang. Four years ago, India rejoiced with a total of 70 medals, partitioned into 16 gold, 23 silver, and 31 bronze.

The day's achievements commenced with race walkers Manju Rani and Ram Baboo, who showcased their stamina and skill in the 35km mixed race walk event. Their stellar performance earned a bronze medal for India, drawing parallels with the medal count from the 2018 Games. Not far behind, compound archers Ojas Deotale and Jyothi Surekha Vennam made headlines by securing the mixed team gold medal, taking the country's tally to 71.

Reflecting on this monumental achievement, India's chef de mission, Bhupender Singh Bajwa, remarked with pride, "It gives me immense pleasure to announce that India has etched its legacy with an unprecedented medal tally at this Asian Games. Having crossed the coveted 70-medal mark, we are optimistic about more victories in the coming days."

Evidently, India's ambitions for the Asian Games were sky-high from the outset. The country sent its most extensive contingent ever, setting their sights firmly on surpassing the 100-medal threshold at this grand continental extravaganza. The phrase 'Aab ki Baar, Sau Paar', resonating the goal of achieving over 100 medals this time around, became a rallying cry for the Indian athletes at the Hangzhou Games.

With India's current medal repository boasting 16 gold, 26 silver, and 29 bronze medals, the nation eagerly awaits the results of the remaining four days of competition. If the current momentum is anything to go by, India is on track to realize its ambitious goal and possibly set a record that could stand for many editions of the Games to come.

In the broader perspective, this achievement not only signifies the individual talents and dedications of the athletes but also highlights the growth and infrastructure development in Indian sports. As the country continues to strive for excellence on the international platform, these milestones serve as a testament to India's growing stature in the global sports arena.
