Former UFC Heavyweight Champion Cain Velasquez Sentenced to Five Years In Prison
During the pursuit, the UFC legend fired five shots from a.40-caliber revolver at the vehicle in which Goularte was but ended up shooting Goularte's stepfather Paul Bender in the arm. Bender had non-life-threatening injuries. But the event made news and resulted in Velasquez's arrest.
After months of awaiting a final conviction, he was sentenced to five years in prison on Monday after pleading no contest to numerous crimes. While many of his fans believed the incident was justified, he violated numerous California laws throughout the chase. However, while he has been sentenced to five years, it is significantly less than the 30-year penalty sought by the district attorney.
Cain Velasquez's UFC Career
Cain Velasquez is among the greatest heavyweight fighters of all time. In 2008, the prodigy signed with the UFC after only two MMA fights, both of which ended in the first round. He went on to win six consecutive fights inside the Octagon. And win a title shot against heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar in 2010. The Mexican American needed less than a round to defeat the WWE legend and win the UFC champion.
In his second bout, he suffered a surprise first-round knockout loss to Junior dos Santos in the company's first-ever national television broadcast. The battle would set off a legendary rivalry with dos Santos, with Velasquez winning the next two fights.
Injuries were perhaps Cain Velasquez's toughest challenge. After defeating JDS in the rubber match in 2013, he would only compete three more times in the following six years. Many die-hard UFC fans regard the American Kickboxing Academy product as the best heavyweight fighter of all time.
