India's star shuttler Satwiksairaj Rankireddy has set a new Guinness World Record after clocking the fastest badminton smash. Apparently Rankireddy has busted a decade old men's badminton record which was scripted in 2013. Meanwhile, Malaysia's star women's shuttler Tan Pearly also entered the Guinness book of World Record after smashing the fastest hit.

The 22-year-old leapfrogged the previous Guinness World Record of 493 km/h (about 306 mph) by 72 km/h (about 45 mph), as he established an astounding new record for the fastest male badminton hit at 565 km/h (about 351 mph). On the other hand the 23-year-old Tan created a new record for the fastest female badminton smash with a lightningh speed of 438 km/h (about 272 mph). With this, Tan became the first female Guinness World Records title holder in the category.

"Yonex is proud to announce that Yonex badminton athletes, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy (IND) and Tan Pearly (MAS), have set new Guinness world records title for the fastest male and female badminton hits," the Japanese sports equipment manufacturing company said in a release.

"Since the previous Guinness world records title for the fastest badminton hit was recorded in May 2013, this means that Rankireddy broke the record for the first time in more than a decade," the release added.

These records show that badminton is significantly faster than other ball sports and even Formula One when compared with other fastest speed records in the Guinness World Records title (Reference 1).

Notably, Rankireddy and Tan's record attempts were registered earlier on April 14, 2023. Later it was verified by official judges from the Guinness World Records based on the speed measurement results and hence they were declared the new record holders in the men's and women's badminton respectively.
