The rivalry between UFC lightweight champion Islam Makhachev and rising star Ilia Topuria has intensified, with Makhachev now publicly questioning Topuria’s willingness to face one particular challenger. At the center of the storm is Armenian fighter Arman Tsarukyan, whom Makhachev describes as the most dangerous threat in the lightweight division.
Makhachev calls out Ilia Topuria
Speaking at a recent press conference in Russia, Makhachev didn’t hold back when asked about a potential clash between Topuria and Tsarukyan.
“It’s no secret that Ilia is dodging Tsarukyan. I’ve seen phrases on the internet where he says: ‘I’d rather end my career than fight him’. Arman is the most serious opponent,” Makhachev said.
This sharp criticism echoes the sentiments of Khabib Nurmagomedov, Islam Makhachev’s mentor and long-time friend, who also believes that Tsarukyan’s grappling-heavy style makes him the kryptonite for Ilia Topuria at 155 pounds.
Tsarukyan’s complicated UFC journey
Arman Tsarukyan has been vocal in his pursuit of another title shot, frequently calling out Topuria in recent weeks. However, the Spanish-Georgian fighter has insisted that Tsarukyan needs one more victory before being considered for championship contention.
Tsarukyan’s path has not been straightforward. He was originally scheduled to challenge Makhachev for the lightweight title at UFC 311 in January, but a back injury forced him out of the bout just 24 hours before fight night. Makhachev went on to submit Renato Moicano in the first round, while Tsarukyan was left sidelined.
Since then, Topuria has moved up to lightweight after making waves in the featherweight division. However, instead of granting Tsarukyan the opportunity many believe he deserves, “El Matador” has made it clear he’s not interested in facing him just yet.
Khabib and Islam Makhachev back Arman Tsarukyan
Both Islam Makhachev and Nurmagomedov see Tsarukyan as a legitimate title contender, capable of dethroning Ilia Topuria if given the chance. They argue that the Armenian has the technical skills and the mindset to cause serious problems for the Spanish-Georgian champion.
While Topuria has his sights set on bigger opportunities, the mounting pressure from within the MMA community suggests he may eventually have to face Tsarukyan. Until then, the war of words between Makhachev and Topuria is only expected to escalate further.
