In the ever-evolving landscape of mixed martial arts, Islam Makhachev’s next chapter might not be a permanent departure from familiar territory. While the reigning pound-for-pound king is preparing for a high-stakes clash at 170 lbs against newly-crowned welterweight champion Jack Della Maddalena, an insider close to the Dagestani star has hinted that this move might be more of an experiment than a long-term shift.
Islam Makhachev eyes welterweight gold—but leaves door open
After dominating the UFC lightweight division and vacating the belt following a historic reign, Islam Makhachev shocked the MMA world with his decision to move up to welterweight. The bold transition opened the gates for Charles Oliveira and Ilia Topuria to contend for the now-vacant lightweight title at UFC 317.
However, Movlid Khaybulaev, an undefeated featherweight contender and close training partner of Makhachev under Khabib Nurmagomedov’s guidance, revealed that Islam Makhachev has not completely closed the chapter on his lightweight legacy.
“He will always come back if it’s interesting”
Speaking ahead of his own PFL semi-final bout in Nashville, Khaybulaev shed light on Makhachev’s current mindset.
“He said himself if he is going to have an interesting fight at lightweight, he will always come back,” Khaybulaev told Bloody Elbow.
“It’s just that he feels right now there is nobody new left for him and he just wants to test himself which is why he is going up to welterweight.”
This statement aligns with Makhachev’s reputation for chasing legacy-defining challenges. With a record-breaking title run at lightweight and successful defenses against elite names, the Dagestani champion has little left to prove in that division—unless a new contender rises or an enticing rematch materializes.
What could lure Makhachev back?
The lightweight landscape remains rich with talent, but the absence of fresh challenges appears to be the only barrier keeping Islam Makhachev from a return. While Khaybulaev ruled out interest in immediate rematches with Oliveira or showdowns with Topuria, the MMA world is dynamic, and rising stars could soon offer compelling matchups.
Should the UFC’s matchmaking align with Makhachev’s ambitions, fans could witness his return to 155 lbs—possibly to reclaim the throne or silence a fresh challenger.
