India’s Tokyo Olympics 2020 silver-medallist Mirabai Chanu broke records to win gold medal on her comeback to Commonwealth Championships on August 25. In the women's 48kg category, she broke record in snatch, clean & jerk and total to finish at the podium in Ahmedabad.

Her total was 193 kg, including 84 kg snatch and 109 kg clean and jerk. She broke the record at Commonwealth Games by a big margin of 14kg.

Her first attempt was of 84 kg. She managed to lift it but the judges deemed it unfit as they were unhappy with her left elbow. She made up for her mistake in the second attempt. The previous record was 80 kg. Later, she attempted to lift 89 kg but due to discomfort in her right knee, it ended up being a failed lift as well.

"I am truly delighted to win the gold medal here because this is my first international event after the Olympics and in 48kg category. I had doubts if I will be able to give the same performance I did in this weight," Chanu said after the win.

"This victory is a great confidence boost as I prepare for the World Championships in October, and I'll continue to give my best to make India proud on the international stage," she added.

Chanu said that she did not know that her first snatch lift was not counted.

"I was not aware the first lift has been deemed no lift. But I think there was an issue with the left hand so that could be the reason," the 31-year-old said.
