Guaff’s loss has put Spain ahead with a 1-0 lead in Group A over the defending champion US side

Coco Gauff is under fire for her recent comments made about the American tennis fans. The World No. 4 has clarified her remarks, which she believes were taken out of context,  just ahead of her surprising loss at the United Cup. She, during an appearance at the news conference at the United Cup, an event outside the country, had recently asked the fans from America to show up more.

The star player revealed her desire to see the fans from her country appear more, especially in Sydney, if they make it there. Her comments drew criticism online, with fans pointing out the high travel costs and expenses, especially for Australia. Gauff’s comments appear to have backfired, forcing the player to release a statement.

Gauff has stated that her comments were taken ‘out of context’, and the people have been dragging her, which made her post a clarification. On her social media account, she wrote that she is ‘not expecting people to travel to tournaments’ and watch them play.

Gauff also wrote that she only stated her ‘perspective’ and is aware of the financial aspect that tennis is ‘not accessible for everyone’.

In her clarification, Gauff, the two-time Grand Slam champion, said:

“It was more of a comment for those who are already attending, and how I wish they were as passionate as those from other countries, more specifically, team events.”

Gauff further wrote that no one owes her anything, and she was just answering a question she was asked. She also stated that she had just provided her ‘observation’ of what she noticed in other countries compared vs America.

Gauff, at the end of her brief clarification post, thanked all the fans for their support, regardless of how ‘big or small it is.’ Meanwhile, following the loss at the United Cup, Gauff is confirmed to lose her American No. 1 ranking. The 2023 US Open Champion did not show her full form in Perth, resulting in a loss to World No. 42 Jessica Bouzas Maneiro with a score of 6-1, 6-7 (3), 6-0.

Additionally, Guaff’s loss has put Spain ahead with a 1-0 lead in Group A over the defending champion US side. However, countryman Taylor Fritz went on to win the men’s singles to recover for Gauff's loss. Later, Coco clinched the mixed doubles alongside partner Christian Harrison to bag the contest for the Americans. The US team is currently in the round-robin matches in Perth. The team would move on to Sydney if they reach the final stages.
