The American star surpasses a long-standing milestone previously held by a US tennis legend.

American tennis star Jessica Pegula has added another milestone to her impressive 2026 campaign after reaching the quarterfinals at Indian Wells Open. The achievement not only highlights her consistency on the WTA Tour but also places her in the history books with a record-breaking feat.

Pegula’s run in California continues what has already been a strong season for the experienced American. After lifting the title at the Dubai Tennis Championships, the 32-year-old has maintained her momentum with another deep tournament run.

Historic record surpassed

According to OptaAce statistics, Pegula has now become the oldest player to reach 20 or more Tier I/WTA-1000 quarterfinals on hard courts since the Tier format was introduced in 1990. At 32 years and eight days old, she surpassed the previous record held by American tennis legend Venus Williams, who reached the milestone at 31 years and 275 days.

The record underscores Pegula’s consistency at the highest level of the sport. While many players struggle to maintain form as their careers progress, Pegula has continued to deliver elite performances across major WTA events.

Her ability to remain competitive against the best players in the world has made her one of the most dependable performers on the tour in recent seasons.

Tough quarterfinal test awaits

Jessica Pegula’s quest for an eighth consecutive semifinal appearance at WTA events in California now faces a difficult challenge. She will need to overcome Elena Rybakina, the reigning Australian Open champion.

The two players recently met at the same stage in Melbourne earlier this year. On that occasion, Rybakina secured a tight victory before going on to defeat world number one Aryna Sabalenka in the final.

Singles success despite doubles exit

While Pegula’s singles campaign has been thriving, her doubles run at Indian Wells ended early. She partnered with fellow American McCartney Kessler, but the pair were knocked out in their opening match.

Meanwhile, veteran Venus Williams also endured disappointment at the event, exiting early in both singles and mixed doubles competition, where she teamed up with Christian Harrison.

Despite the doubles setback, Jessica Pegula’s singles performance remains the highlight. Her historic achievement at Indian Wells further cements her status as one of the most consistent performers in modern women’s tennis.
