Prolonged losing streak sparks major concerns over team direction.

Trade discussions intensify with a key player emerging as a potential asset.

New York Mets find themselves in deep turmoil as an alarming 11-game losing streak threatens to derail their season. Entering the campaign with one of the highest payrolls in Major League Baseball—second only to the Los Angeles Dodgers—the expectations were clear: contend, compete, and correct last year’s collapse.

Instead, the situation has worsened. What once looked like a team poised for redemption is now battling inconsistency, injuries, and underperformance across the roster. With time slipping away, the Mets are now staring at a scenario few anticipated—a potential shift toward selling at the trade deadline.

Star power fails to deliver

A major factor behind the team’s struggles has been the lack of impact from its biggest names. Injuries and form issues have crippled the Mets’ ability to build momentum, leaving the lineup exposed and the pitching staff under constant pressure.

ESPN’s David Schoenfield captured the gravity of the situation, writing:

“When your superstars are either injured (Juan Soto) or off to a concerning start (Francisco Lindor), the entire enterprise will look like it’s on life support. New York Mets probably aren’t this bad. Still, most of David Stearns’ offseason moves look bad so far: Jorge Polanco won’t replace Pete Alonso; Marcus Semien looks old; Carson Benge was rushed to the majors; Bo Bichette hasn’t hit; and Devin Williams got hammered last week by the Dodgers. Of all those issues, only Bichette is a sure bet to play better.”

The blunt assessment reflects a team struggling to find answers, both on the field and in the front office’s decisions.

Trade rumblings begin to surface

As losses pile up, attention has turned toward the trade market. According to Schoenfield, right-handed pitcher Jonah Tong has emerged as the most likely trade candidate for the Mets.

Tong, currently ranked as the No. 43 prospect in baseball by MLB.com, has yet to feature at the major league level this season. His performances in Triple-A have also raised concerns, with a 7.04 ERA in limited innings.

Despite these struggles, his prospect status still holds value—making him a potential piece in deals aimed at reshaping the roster.

New York Mets are now at a crossroads. A quick turnaround could revive their playoff hopes, but continued struggles may force a significant shift in strategy.

With mounting pressure and the trade deadline approaching, New York’s next moves could redefine the trajectory of their season—and possibly their long-term future.
