Giants consider a two-time All-Star as a potential successor to a departing veteran pitcher.

Oracle Park and defensive support make the team an ideal landing spot for a top free-agent pitcher.

San Francisco Giants are turning their focus toward pitching after a middling 81-81 finish in the 2025 MLB season, which saw them miss the playoffs. Despite off-season additions like Willy Adames and a trade for Rafael Devers to strengthen the offense, the Giants’ rotation remains a key area for improvement.

Bleacher Report analyst Zachary D. Rymer has suggested that Houston Astros ace Framber Valdez could be a perfect fit for San Francisco, especially as a successor to Justin Verlander, who will not return for the 2026 season.

“Webb, Ray and Roupp are slated to return in 2026, but not Justin Verlander. And while simply bringing him back for his age-43 season is one option, the Giants also have to consider bigger swings that would draw them closer to the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West. Signing Valdez would fit the bill, and there might not be a better fit for him on paper,” Rymer wrote.

Framber Valdez: Stats and potential impact

Valdez, a two-time All-Star, posted a 3.66 ERA with a 13-11 record, a 1.245 WHIP, and 187 strikeouts over 192 innings pitched this season. While his late-season performance dipped, prior to the trade deadline, he had an 11-4 record, a 2.62 ERA, and 141 strikeouts, showcasing his ability to dominate when healthy and in form.

The Giants’ pitching environment at Oracle Park could further enhance Valdez’s performance. Known as a pitcher-friendly stadium, it could help him regain his top form quickly while enjoying the protection of defensive stars like Matt Chapman and Willy Adames behind him.

“If he can get back to his normal self, he would be the perfect ace to take over in San Francisco,” Rymer noted.

Giants’ offseason priorities

With Valdez projected to be one of the most sought-after pitchers on the market, the Giants will need to act swiftly this offseason to secure his services. A move for Valdez could give San Francisco the edge needed to challenge division rivals, particularly the Los Angeles Dodgers, while filling the void left by Verlander’s departure.

“Hopefully, the Giants get on the phone fast this offseason, as Valdez will be the top pitcher on the market, and many other teams will want him as well,” Rymer added.

If executed, landing Valdez would mark a significant step toward strengthening the Giants’ rotation, signaling the organization’s intent to return to playoff contention and compete at the top of the NL West in 2026.
