In the 1986 season of the NFL, four players from the New York Mets were arrested because they had a scuffle with off-duty police officers who were working security at a bar.

The names of these four players are Ron Darling, Bob Ojeda, Rick Aguilera and Tim Teufel.

During the 1986 season of the National Football League (NFL), New York Mets manager Davey Johnson had a tough situation ahead of him as four players from his side were arrested in July. The cause of the arrest was, that they had a scuffle with off-duty police officers who were working security at a bar.

Four players who were involved

The four players who were arrested for the New York Mets were Ron Darling, Bob Ojeda, Rick Aguilera and Tim Teufel. On top of it, the club's next game was against Houston Astros and the following players were released.

According to the New York Times, firstly, Johnson imposed a fine on all four players who broke the curfew and then all the players were banned from going near a bar. Johnson said, "My main rule is, 'Don't embarrass me or the ball club.' This is embarrassing to the club, to their families and to me, so I'm forced to fine them."

All the four above-mentioned players were not allowed to speak on the incident on the advice of their attorney. Meanwhile, a statement was made on their behalf from the official team.

The team official team Jay Horwitz as advised by the attorney said, "The four players involved in the incident would like it made public that they feel they were unduly assaulted by police personnel on the scene and that one of the players, Tim Teufel, was in fact severely beaten by police."

It was reported that Teufel had bruises on his upper right arm and Darling was pushed through a glass window.

The controversy could not stop New York Mets

With this becoming a huge controversy, it had zero effect on Davey Johnson and the New York Mets as they finished with a franchise record of 108-54. They even clinched the National League East and made it to the playoffs.

The Mets then went on to beat the Houston Astros in six games in the NCLS and defeated the Boston Red Sox in the World Series. It was the last time that the New York Mets won the championship.
