Dallas Mavericks owner Patrick Dumont has accepted his team management's blunder in trading Luka Doncic away last season. In an attempt to fix the problem, Dumont and Mavs have fired general manager Nico Harrison.
Trading Luka Doncic away was a big mistake
NBA insider Shams Charania broke the news on Tuesday morning. He posted Harrison's picture in an X (FKA Twitter) post and accompanied his report in the caption.
"The Dallas Mavericks and owner Patrick Dumont are expected to fire general manager Nico Harrison at a 10 am central time meeting on Tuesday, sources tell me and Tim MacMahon," Charania tweeted.
In a follow-up post, Charania disclosed that Dumont accepted trading Luka Doncic as a mistake.
"The Mavericks are firing Harrison nine months after the jarring and stunning Luka Doncic trade- a move for which Dumont took accountability and accepted as a mistake in a court-side interaction with a fan on Monday night," Charania wrote.
Biggest trade move in the last twenty years
Luka Doncic's move to the LA Lakers was the biggest trade committed in the last twenty years in the history of the NBA. The Mavericks received a 2029 draft pick, Max Christie, and 10-time All-Star Anthony Davis in return for Doncic.
As of now, the Lakers have been the only one getting benefit from the deal. Doncic went through a physical transformation in the offseason. He lost a lot of weight and became faster on the court.
Luka Doncic's great season so far for LA Lakers
Doncic has been dropping amazing performances in the league so far. He is averaging 37.1 points, 9.4 rebounds and 9.1 assists per game on 49% shooting from the field. He is on the way for a potential MVP season, while the Mavs have become one of the worst sides in the league.
Anthony Davis is frequently in and out of games because of injuries, while his team stands on the 13th position in the standings with a 3-8 record.
Dallas Mavericks appoint interim leaders for basketball operations
Soon after announcing the news on Nico Harrison's firing, Shams Charania disclosed the people shortlisted to take his place. The Mavs have appointed Michael Finley and Matt Riccardi to oversee the basketball operations in the meantime.
"The Mavericks and Patrick Dumont have 10:30 am central time meetings to appoint executives Michael Finley and Matt Riccardi to lead basketball operations in interim, sources tell me and Tim MacMahon," Charania wrote.
Finley is a former Mavericks player who currently holds the position of Vice President of player personnel in Dallas. Matt Riccardi served as an assistant manager of the team under Harrison.
