Victor Wembanyama continues to make history and impress NBA fans with his all-around play, and Saturday night’s performance was no exception. The San Antonio Spurs phenom posted a monster stat line in a narrow 111-110 loss to the Utah Jazz: 24 points, 16 rebounds, and 7 blocks, while setting a career-high with six made 3-pointers. This performance made Wembanyama the first player in NBA history to record multiple games with 20+ points, 15+ rebounds, 5+ blocks, and 5+ made 3-pointers.
The 20-year-old also joined rare company in the NBA record books. With his six 3-pointers and seven blocks, he became just the second player ever to achieve this feat in a single game, following Brook Lopez, who made six 3-pointers and blocked eight shots on February 17, 2017.
On a Record Spree
Wembanyama’s achievements don’t stop there. This was his third career game with at least five 3-pointers and five blocks, tying Kristaps Porzingis for the second-most such games in NBA history. Raef LaFrentz holds the record with four such games. Additionally, Wembanyama now has 10 career games with seven or more blocks, making him the youngest player in NBA history to reach that milestone. In his second season, Wembanyama is already putting up impressive numbers. He’s averaging 18.3 points, 10.2 rebounds, 2.4 assists, 1.4 steals, and 4.0 blocks per game while shooting 42.5% from the field and 28.2% from beyond the arc. If Saturday’s performance is any indication, his shooting stroke may be coming around, and once it does, he’ll only get more dangerous.
During the game last game Wembanyama shared his thoughts on his recent play. "My rhythm's there for sure, But there's so much more to be gained. It's just a matter of how well we can combine everything together. Once we combine it all, it's great. But it's about how often we can do it, and this is how we can keep piling up wins."
When told he had set a new career-high for 3-pointers in a single game, Wembanyama responded with a hint of surprise: "Really? I've never made six 3s in a game?"
Spurs interim head coach Mitch Johnson was also quick to praise his star player’s shooting. "He made shots that he's missed earlier [this season]. So, there's not a reaction either way. He's a phenomenal shooter. We want him shooting all those shots."
Wembanyama’s evolution is already clear, and with each game, he’s proving why he's considered the future of the NBA. As he continues to build on his already extraordinary skill set, the sky truly seems to be the limit for this young superstar.
