Former India opener Gautam Gambhir is in the list of players who can replace Rahul Dravid as the head coach of the Indian Cricket Team after the T20 World Cup 2024. As per top sources, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) mentor Gambhir will apply for the role if the cricket board formally approaches him.
Gambhir is currently involved in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 where he is mentoring his franchise Kolkata Knight Riders. Under his mentorship, the franchise have qualified for the final and now they will face Sunrisers Hyderabad for the title decider at M.A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
As per the sources Gambhir is currently focussing on the IPL 2024 final. “He is now only focused on the final nothing else I know tomorrow is the deadline but he is not thinking of that at the moment his whole focus is winning the final,” a source close to Gambhir said.
Last Date to apply for India coach role
The last date to apply for the head coach's role is May 27. Two days before the last date BCCI had denied that they hadn't reached Ricky Ponting and Justin Langer for the head coach's job, though the duo claimed that they were approached but decided to turn down the offer.
Gambhir's role in KKR
If Gambhir does apply for the post then he would have to leave his position as the mentor for the Knight Riders. Under Gambhir's leadership, KKR won two IPL titles and now KKR are performing really well under his mentorship and this is the biggest reason behind Gambhir's stock as India's potential head coach rising up.
