Virat Kohli scored 37 runs from 28 balls including three sixes against Bangladesh.
India beat Bangladesh by a comfortable margin of 50 runs in Antigua.
India registered a comprehensive 50-run victory over Bangladesh at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, Antigua on June 22. After Hardik Pandya’s unbeaten half-century helped India set a daunting target of 197, Bangladesh struggled in the run chase. The required run rate slipped out of their grasp and in the last few overs there was no pressure on Indian bowlers. Towards the end, Rishad Hossain played a cameo. One of the sixes was over deep mid-wicket which led to Virat Kohli going over the advertising boards and search for the ball.
The incident took place in the 17th over of Bangladesh’s unsuccessful run chase. Arshdeep Singh bowled a slower off-cutter but Rishad picked it early. He stayed on the back foot and whacked it over deep mid-wicket for a six. The ball was under one of the platforms. Kohli got on his knees, went under it to look for the ball. Kohli’s action tickled the funny bone of cricketer-turned commentator Harbhajan Singh.
Rishad contributed with a 10-ball 24. He lost his wicket to Jasprit Bumrah in the penultimate over. Towards the end, Kohli was in a fun mood fielding on the boundary. He was grooving to the tunes playing in the stadium as India practically cemented their T20 World Cup 2024 semifinal spot with one more game to play at the Super 8 stage.
Kohli's entertaining knock
Earlier, Kohli finally found form in the ongoing tournament. He targetted Shakib Al Hasan in the second over of the innings smashing him for a six over long-on. He whacked Mustafizur Rahman for a 94-metre maximum in the sixth over to get India's score past 50. He hit Rishad for a six as well. But in the ninth over, he went down the track and missed the slower ball from young pacer Tanzim Hasan Sakib. He contributed with a 28-ball 37.
Milestone for Kohli
The 35-year-old also became the first ever batter to score 3,000 runs in World Cups (ODI and T20I). He is already the leading run-scores in T20 World Cups. In ODI World Cups, he is the second-highest run-scorer. The top spot is occupied by legendary Sachin Tendulkar.
