'Staring at him is very difficult': Iftikhar Ahmed reacts after verbal exchange with Shaheen Afridi during PSL match

Pakistan batter Iftikhar Ahmed spoke about his on-field exchange of words with Shaheen Afridi during the game between Lahore Qalandars and Multan Sultans in the ongoing Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2024.

 

The incident took place when Multan Sultans needed 39 runs in 21 balls, and Iftikhar Ahmed came out to bat in the 17th over after the dismissal of batter Mohammad Rizwan.

Ahmed started his innings with a boundary before Afridi came on to bowl, and the 33-year-old hit Afridi for a boundary as well. Afridi was seen saying something to his Pakistani teammate while also raising his arm. Ahmed was also in no mood to back down as he was staring at the pacer before he said something to him. The umpire had to intervene to bring the situation under control between the two teammates. After the match, Ahmed was asked about his fight with the 23-year-old.

On being asked about the fight after the match Iftikhar said:

 

“This is the beauty of cricket, staring angrily or boasting about yourself. Personally, I play aggressively. Shaheen is my junior, there are no issues with him. He is now the captain of Pakistan as well, so staring at him is very difficult”.

 

Batting first, the Lahore Qalandars posted a total of 166/5 in their 20 overs. South African batter Rassie Van Der Dussen scored 54 runs, and Fakhar Zaman scored 41 runs. For the Multan Sultans, fast bowler Mohammad Ali picked up two wickets, and Abbas Afridi and Usama Mir picked up a wicket each. Chasing 167, the Sultans won the match with one over to spare and five wickets remaining. Their captain, Mohammad Rizwan, top-scored with 82 runs, and Ifthikhar Ahmed played a good cameo of 34 runs off 11 balls for Lahore. Shaheen Afridi was the pick of the bowlers, taking two wickets and just conceding 25 runs in four overs.

After the match, Afridi praised Iftikhar for his finishing, saying: 'Iftikhar Ahmed and Khushdil are the best finishers in the country. We played good cricket but didn’t take our chances.'

Multan Sultans are currently in the first position, having won all three of their first games so far, while Lahore Qalandars are in the second-to-last position, having lost all three of their first games.
