Team India made a forced change to their 15-member squad for ODI World Cup 2023. India's 2011 World Cup-winning member Ravichandran Ashwin has walked into the squad as Axar Patel failed to recover from a left quadriceps strain he picked up during the Asia Cup Super Four encounter against Bangladesh.
The rest of the squad remains the same. No reserves have been named for the mega event.
Earlier in the day, Ashwin touched down in Guwahati with Team India ahead of their first warm-up game against defending champions England at Barsapara Cricket Stadium, Guwahati on September 30.
The 37-year-old was included in the ODI squad after Patel got injured. He was the first choice to replace him for the Asia Cup final but wasn't fully fit. As a result, Washington Sundar played in the Asia Cup 2023 final against Sri Lanka where Rohit Sharma-led side won by 10 wickets after Mohammed Siraj's six-fer bundled out Sri Lanka for a paltry score of 50. However, Ashwin made a splendid comeback. He picked up one wicket in Mohali ODI followed by a three-fer in a rain-curtailed affair in Indore.
Ashwin is among the only two Indian players who were a part of the 2011 World Cup-winning squad. The Tamil Nadu-born bowling all-rounder has 155 wickets to his name from 115 games including one four-fer.
No.1 ICC-ranked ODI team India will play their second warm-up game against the Netherlands at Greenfield International Stadium, Thiruvananthapuram on October 3. They will begin their World Cup campaign against Australia on October 8 at MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai.
