Teenager Musheer Khan has continued to make headlines. With a crucial 136-run knock on Day 3 of the Ranji Trophy 2023-24 final against Vidarbha, Musheer broke legendary Sachin Tendulkar’s record with the latter in attendance at the Wankhede Stadium. Aged 19 years and 14 days, Musheer became the youngest Mumbai batter to score a century in the Ranji Trophy final.
Tendulkar achieved the record in the 1994-95 season final. Tendulkar led Mumbai to a title win against Punjab. He scored twin centuries in the final on his 22nd birthday.
After a double century in the quarter-final clash against Baroda, Musheer carried his form in the final. He scored a half-century in the first innings amidst a batting collapse. In the second innings, he anchored the innings while skipper Ajinkya Rahane scored a half-century and Shreyas Iyer smashed 10 fours and three sixes in his 95 off 111 balls.
Sarfaraz Khan’s brother shared a 130-run partnership for the third wicket with Rahane and a 168-run partnership for the fourth wicket with Iyer.
Musheer was dismissed by left-arm spinner Harsh Dubey just before the tea break. He was trapped in front of the stumps. He faced as many as 326 deliveries to register a patient 136 which was studded with 10 fours.
Tendulkar ecstatic with Mumbai’s approach
Tendulkar lauded Mumbai's approach in the second innings as he wrote on X: “Mumbai displayed a lot more discipline, patience and commitment in the second innings. First, a crucial partnership between @ajinkyarahane88 and Musheer Khan put Mumbai in a solid position. Then, Musheer's stand with @ShreyasIyer15 has taken the game further away from Vidarbha. Had a good time watching the game today with my friends and colleagues.”
Big win expected for Mumbai
Mumbai are likely to register their record-extending 42nd title win in Ranji Trophy history. Vidarbha batters will have to create history to chase down a target of over 500 in the final two days of the Ranji Trophy 2023-24 final.
Musheer continues to shine
Earlier this year, Musheer made headlines when he scored two centuries in the ICC Men’s Under-19 World Cup 2024.
