New York has tightened its security after ISIS' threat to India vs Pakistan's T20 World Cup clash.
Police snipers has been positioned, plainclothes officers are patrolling the venue as well to ensure the beefed up security.
The T20 World Cup 2024 in New York is being prioritised by the US government when it comes to security. This heightened focus comes after a threat from an ISIS-linked group targeting the high-profile India vs Pakistan match scheduled for June 9. To ensure safety, police snipers have been strategically positioned around the Nassau County Cricket International Stadium, which will host matches from June 3 to 12. This brand new stadium, built specifically for the World Cup and boasting a capacity of 34,000 spectators, is located in Eisenhower Park, New York. It will make its official debut on Monday with the South Africa versus Sri Lanka match. Eight games, including the high-profile India vs Pakistan clash, are slated for this venue, with one warm-up match already played there.
"The safety and security of everyone at the event is our number one priority and we have a comprehensive and robust security plan in place," the International Cricket Council (ICC) said in a statement to BBC Sport.
"We work closely with authorities in our host countries and continually monitor and evaluate the global landscape to ensure appropriate plans are in place to mitigate any risks identified to our event," he added.
A BBC report sheds light on the comprehensive security measures in place for the T20 World Cup. Beyond the police snipers positioned around the stadium, SWAT teams with even more specialized snipers are also involved. Not just this, plainclothes officers are patrolling the venue as well.
The commitment to security extends beyond the stands. Officers from the Nassau County Police Department have been reassigned to keep a watchful eye on the four drop-in pitches, monitoring them 24/7. This vigilance highlights the multi-layered approach being taken. The security effort isn't solely shouldered by local law enforcement. A collaborative force has been assembled, including the Nassau County Police Department, the New York Police Department, the FBI, the Department of Homeland Security, and other agencies.
