Afghanistan's head coach Richard Pybus addressed the talks around Rashid Khan's Test future

Richard Pybus clearly said that Rashid needs to manage himself, given his long-standing back complaint

Afghanistan head coach Richard Pybus is planning to hold discussions with star leg-spinner Rashid Khan regarding his long-term future in red-ball cricket. However, Pybus acknowledged that Rashid's immediate availability for Test matches remains uncertain due to a combination of a chronic back injury and a highly demanding global playing schedule.

He has got this long-standing back complaint: Afghanistan coach on Rashid Khan's Test future

Speaking on the eve of Afghanistan's one-off Test match against India, Pybus emphasized that managing the bowler's workload is a top priority for the team. He noted that careful player management is essential as Afghanistan looks to establish a sustainable Test programme, particularly while navigating an erratic and unpredictable fixture list.

"Rashid has got this long-standing back complaint. He's got such a huge volume of cricket, you know, he's got to manage himself. I look forward to having that conversation to see how we can support him, not only just with the opportunity to maybe continue to play some red-ball cricket if there is potential for that, but generally make sure he can play as long and as healthy as possible for Afghanistan," Pybus said at the pre-match press conference.

Pybus on prospects of Afghanistan getting full membership in Tests

The absence of Rashid has once again brought to light the ongoing challenges Afghanistan faces in balancing the competing demands of global franchise leagues and the Test format. This dilemma was a focal point for Richard Pybus, who repeatedly returned to the subject during his first official media interaction since taking charge of the national side. The former West Indies director of cricket, who is currently overseeing his maiden assignment with Afghanistan, stressed that individual player availability is only part of the problem. Instead, Pybus emphasised that the larger, more systemic issue confronting the team is the lack of a consistent and predictable Test match calendar.

"When a country gets full membership, it's one thing to get full membership, but then you need to get a full fixture list. I'd like to see going forward that the other senior full members also start to build out the list. We need to be in a situation now where there's a proper fixture list," he added.

Pybus, having spent the past few weeks evaluating Afghanistan's domestic cricket structure during several visits to Kabul, noted that he was pleasantly surprised by the overall quality and depth found within the country's first-class system.

"I've been very impressed watching the quality of the first-class cricket. It was very positive in being able to benchmark that relative to seeing other first-class cricket around the world and the type of depth there is in the system. I think Jonathan did an outstanding job over four years. It's really about continuing to build on what is already in place."

Pybus expects spin bowling to become increasingly influential at the Mullanpur playing surface as the Test match progresses. Despite the wicket's current green appearance, which usually favors fast bowlers early on, the head coach anticipates that the pitch will wear and break up over time to benefit the spinners.

"It looks like a good cricket wicket. With the heat, the moisture is going to get pulled out very quickly. Both sides have got plenty of spinners. Spin is going to play a major part in the game even though it looks pretty green at the moment," he concluded.
