Smith's dismissal saw the Snicko controversy erupt again

England wicketkeeper-batter Jamie Smith was controversially given out during the second day of the Adelaide Test against Australia. This comes after Alex Carey's stay on the crease got extended due to a technical mistake by the Snickometer on Day 1. The incident on the second day involving Smith once again raised questions over the reliability of Snicko and frustrated England even more.

How did the incident unfold?

It all happened when Smith tried to play a pull shot off Cummins, but wasn't able to connect and the ball went straight into the hands of Carey. On-field  umpire Nitin Menon sent the decision upstairs in order to check if the catch was clean or not. Replays showed that there was a clear gap between the bat and ball. However, the Snickometer still displayed a spike as theball passed Smith's bat, leading third umpire Chris Gaffaney to rule Smith as out.

Smith didn't look satisfied at all with the decision and shook his head in disbelief. On the other hand, Ben Stokes, who was batting on the other end, seemed to be furious but kept his composure.

Australia take complete control on Day 3

Smith's dismissal during the third session saw England go down to 159/6 at one stage. Things would soon go from bad to worse for them as Scott Boland dismissed both Will Jacks and Brydon Carse in quick intervals as the Three Lions got restricted to 168/8. It looked as if the end of their innings was near. However, a gritty 45-run partnership between Stokes and Jofra Archer saw them avoid being bowled out during the day and finish on 213/8, still 158 runs behind Australia's first-inning total of 371.

It would take a monumental effort from the remaining batters in order for England to take the lead in the match. It remains to be seen how far will they manage to take their total on the highly-anticipated third day of the Adelaide Test.
