All eyes are on the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) as the fans eagerly awaits the announcement of India's squad for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025. The tournament is set to begin on September 9 and will be held in the UAE instead of the originally planned host, India.
When will BCCI announce India's Asia Cup squad?
In a change from the last edition, the competition will be played in the T20 format. The BCCI is reportedly waiting for fitness reports on several key players from the NCA before finalising the squad, with an announcement expected to be made in the coming days.
Shreyas Iyer-Sanju Samson's selection almost certain
However, Sports Tak has learnt that BCCI is likely to announce India's Asia Cup squad on August 16 or August 17. Meanwhile, a top source privy to the development has also disclosed to Sports Tak that Shreyas Iyer's selection has almost been finalised. Not just him, even Sanju Samson's spot in the India's Asia Cup squad is also certain. Iyer will be returning to India's T20I set up after more than 20 months.
Notably, this will be India's first major tournament since the retirements of key players Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja from the shortest format. With the veterans gone, the onus will be on the new generation of players including Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, and Sanju Samson to lead India's pack. The team will be led by Suryakumar Yadav, though his participation is currently in doubt. However, it has been learnt that selectors are monitoring Suryakumar Yadav's progress following the star batter's surgery. Suryakumar recently returned to the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru following his hernia surgery earlier this year but the last decision will lie in the hands of selectors.
India, who are placed in Group A, will start their Asia Cup 2025 campaign with a clash against UAE on September 10 followed by a key clash against arch-rivals Pakistan on September 14. India will then take on Oman on September 19 in their last group-stage match.
