Story Highlights:

Ravi Shastri talked about his experience of coaching Team India

Ravi Shastri was the head coach of India from 2017 to 2021

Former India's head coach Ravi Shastri is in no mood to take up the coaching post again as he believes the top role comes with huge responsibilities which takes a toll on the individual. Ravi Shastri's tenure as India's head coach, from 2017 to 2021, followed a period where he had already served as the team's director. During this time, he formed a powerful partnership with captain Virat Kohli, leading to one of the most successful eras in Indian cricket.

I need a breather: Ravi Shastri on aspirations of coaching Team India again

Although an ICC trophy eluded them, Shastri's leadership was marked by several historic achievements. He guided the team to two consecutive Test series victories in Australia, a feat never before accomplished by an Indian side. Additionally, India held a commanding 2-1 lead in their 2021 Test series in England, which was ultimately postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Since stepping down after the 2021 T20 World Cup, Shastri has transitioned back to the commentary box and has stated that he has no plans to return to coaching.

“I did it for 7 years, my friend; it takes its toll. So, I need a breather. Oh, it's 250 plus days a year, just the travel and the amount of hours that go into the nets, and things of that sort, it takes a toll,” Shastri told Sky Sports Cricket.

Following Ravi Shastri's departure as head coach, the Indian team went on to achieve significant success. Under Rahul Dravid's guidance, India lifted the 2024 T20 World Cup in the USA and the West Indies. The team's winning streak continued with the appointment of Gautam Gambhir as the current coach, as they secured the 2025 Champions Trophy.

Shastri also took the opportunity to commend Shubman Gill for his exceptional performance as captain in his debut Test series against England. Gill was in remarkable form, scoring 754 runs at an average of 75.40, including four centuries across the five-match series.

“No question, Shubman Gill, he will be there for a long long time. You saw the kind of series he had here in England; he’s only going to get better. He’s right up there, very regal, and has that look in him, very easy on the eyes and very fluent,” he added.
