Afghanistan beat Hong Kong by 94 runs.

Azmatullah Omarzai played a key role in Afghanistan’s commanding 94-run win over Hong Kong in the Asia Cup 2025 opener at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi. Coming in during the final overs, Omarzai turned the game in his team's favour with a stunning knock of 53 off just 21 balls that helped Afghanistan to a match-winning total of 188 for six.

After smashing the bowlers, Omarzai made an immediate impact with the ball as well. He dismissed Zeeshan Ali in his very first over, applying early pressure on Hong Kong’s chase. After that, his sharp throw led to the run-out of Kalhan Challu, further denting Hong Kong’s hopes.

After Afghanistan's win, Omarzai said that batting in the lower order is always tough, and he had a conversation with Atal to go for boundaries after the 16th over. The all-rounder further stated that he feels like he is a proper bowler, but when he is batting, he feels like he is a bowler.

“Batting in the lower order is always tough, but for me, it’s all about self-belief. The captain and coach have confidence in me, and that gives me the freedom to play my game. I was just trying to keep things simple and hit straight.

We lost a few early wickets, so I spoke to Atal and we agreed to go for big shots after the 16th over. I enjoy both roles — when I’m bowling, I feel like a proper bowler, and when I’m batting, I feel like a proper batter,” he added with a smile.

With this dominating win against Hong Kong, Afghanistan bags two crucial points and a good run-rate in the mega event. Afghanistan will now face Bangladesh for their second group-stage clash on September 16 at the same venue.
