Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli became the fastest to 5,000 ODI runs as a pair in ODI cricket. They achieved the milestone from the 85th ODI innings together. The milestone was achieved in the 12th over of India’s innings against Sri Lanka as Kohli got off the mark with a couple of runs against Dunith Wellalage.
The previous record belonged to West Indies pair Gordon Greenidge and Desmond Haynes who completed 5,000 ODI runs as a pair from 97 innings. Earlier, the fastest Indian pair to reach the feat was Rohit and Shikhar Dhawan from 112 innings.
Rohit and Kohli became the third Indian pair to put on 5,000 runs in ODIs. Sourav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar are on the top with 8,227 runs from 176 innings which they achieved in a decade and a half.
The Indian duo has shared 15 fifty-plus partnerships and 18-century partnerships. Earlier in the game, Rohit became the second-fastest Indian batter to complete 10,000 ODI runs from 241 innings. The opener also became the sixth Indian batter to achieve the milestone in the format.
Rohit is currently the leading run-getter in Asia Cup 2023. The 36-year-old also became the first batter to register 10 fifty-plus scores in ODI Asia Cup history. He scored 53 runs from 48 balls including seven fours and two sixes. He got bowled by left-arm spinner Dunith Wellalage as the ball kept low.
Kohli could not contribute much with the bat as his purple patch in Colombo came to an end. He departed after scoring three runs from 12 balls. He became Wellalage's victim as well by handing an easy catch to short mid-wicket fielder Dasun Shanaka.
